Synaptic plasticity is widely accepted to be the cellular basis of learning and memory processes. A crucial molecule for promoting neuronal plasticity is the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Neuron derived BDNF is subjected to complex transcriptional regulation through alternative splicing (transcripts BDNF I to IX), and post-transcriptional sorting and processing. The focus of my current research is to elucidate the functional role of alternatively spliced brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) variants on the molecular mechanisms underlying neuronal plasticity. Furthermore, I am interested molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration (in particular Alzheimer’s disease) and strategies to combat brain damage by various molecular, pharmaceutical and immunological approaches.
